Montana's Congressman, Denny Rehberg, today announced a public listening session to provide an update on the status of the historic Veterans Jesus Memorial on Big Mountain near Whitefish, Montana. In attendance will be special guest Rep. Randy Forbes who is the Chair of the Congressional Prayer Caucus and CeCe Heil, Senior Counsel for the American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ), which is fighting the legal battle on behalf of the memorial.
"This incredible piece of history has always meant a lot to the local community in Whitefish, but now it's become an important source of patriotism for the rest of the country, too," said Rehberg. "It's not uncommon for folks I talk to who don't necessarily live in Montana to know what's going on at Big Mountain. We get a lot of support from across this country, and that the way it ought to be. I hope folks will come out and show how much this fight means to us."
The Veterans Jesus Memorial is the subject of a lawsuit filed by the Wisconsin-based Freedom From Religion Foundation to force the removal of the statue, which has been there for nearly 60 years. After the Forest Service initially rejected renewal of a special use permit for the 25' by 25' parcel of U.S. Forest Service land, Rehberg lead a community effort that included 95,000 public comments from around the country, to get the Forest Service to reverse its ruling and allow the permit.
