Congresswoman Vicky Hartzler (MO-4), a vocal opponent of the sequestration process that could devastate our military and put America's national defense at risk, is applauding House approval of legislation to force the Obama Administration to reveal its plan regarding cuts to national defense.

"The Sequestration Transparency Act would require the Obama Administration to submit to Congress a detailed preview of the sequestration required by the Budget Control Act, which I voted against," said Hartzler, a co-sponsor of the bill and member of the House Armed Services Committee. "Under the Budget Control Act's sequestration clause, more than $500 billion in military reductions over the next 10 years would be implemented. Americans want to know how these reductions would be made."

"One of the most important responsibilities of the United States government is to provide for the common defense," continued Hartzler. "It is up to Congress to act quickly to head off these dangerous reductions that will put our national security at risk and imperil America's fragile economy. The House has approved legislation to replace defense cuts with responsible savings through reform. Without further action by the Senate and the Obama Administration, significant across the board cuts to defense will take place in January of next year."

"The Sequestration Transparency Act will put the cutting process in the open," added Hartzler. "The White House must inform Congress and the American people about its plans to cut national security."

Congresswoman Hartzler represents Missouri's Fourth Congressional District, home to Fort Leonard Wood and Whiteman Air Force Base.
