Hartzler and House Vote to Fund National Defense

Location: Unknown

Congresswoman Vicky Hartzler (MO-4), a member of the House Armed Services Committee, and her House colleagues have approved the 2013 Defense Appropriations Act to fund America's national defense and our men and women in uniform. The bill provides $519.2 billion to pay for day-to-day operations, including salaries of military personnel. It also calls for $88.5 billion to fight the war on terrorism.

"One of the first responsibilities of the United States government is to provide for the common defense," said Hartzler. "The Defense Appropriations bill ensures our military has the resources necessary to protect our vital interests at home and abroad. It would also prohibit funding for the transfer of Guantanamo terrorist suspects to the U.S. or its territories, prohibits funding to modify any prison or other facility in the United States to hold these inmates, and places conditions on the release of these individuals to other countries."

"The men and women proudly serving our country will receive pay raises," continued Hartzler. "I am particularly pleased that the bill provides for a 1.7 percent increase beginning January 1st of next year."

"Additionally, this package contains $102.5 billion to pay for new equipment and upgrades to older equipment to make sure our military forces have the platforms, weapons, and requirements needed to train for operations," continued Hartzler. "And it provides almost $70 billion for research, development, testing, and evaluation efforts to advance the safety and success of current and future military operations and to help prepare our forces with the systems and equipment necessary to meet potential challenges. I certainly hope the Senate takes up this common sense legislation, passes it, and sends it to President Obama for his signature."

Vicky Hartzler represents Missouri's Fourth Congressional District, home to Fort Leonard Wood and Whiteman Air Force Base. She serves proudly on the House Armed Services Committee.
