As a life-long nurse, fighting to increase affordable access to quality healthcare is one of the primary reasons I first ran for office. I understand the complex healthcare issues facing our state and know the importance of working to ensure access to quality care for individuals of all ages.
Throughout my first three years in office, I have established myself as a key leader on healthcare issues facing our state. Among other recognitions, I was awarded the 2010 WI Public Health Association Legislator of the Year and 2010 HealthWatch WI Elected Official of the Year. I was the lead author of the Wisconsin Mental Health and Substance Use Disorder Parity Act, which helps individuals living with these conditions enjoy healthier lives and become more productive members within our community. I also have led efforts to address the tragic health disparities prevalent in Milwaukee, such as working to reduce skyrocketing infant mortality rates and address other poor health outcomes prevalent in Milwaukee.
Further, this past legislative session, I fought to:
* Prevent the Walker administration from potentially kicking tens of thousands of individuals off their health care
* Save the popular SeniorCare prescription drug program after Gov. Walker announced his plans to end this program in its current form
* Remove the cap Gov. Walker placed on Family Care, which provides vital services for elderly individuals and some of our most vulnerable populations
I have a proven record of fighting for the health of Milwaukee's communities, and these efforts will continue to be a top priority of mine as your State Representative.
