Jason Sharp Signs the Death Tax Repeal Pledge!

Press Release

Date: July 26, 2012
Location: Greenwood, IN

Jason Sharp, Libertarian candidate for Congress in Indiana's 9th Congressional District, is the only Congressional candidate in the 9th District to sign the Death Tax Repeal Pledge.

The Death Tax is a tax on your right to transfer property at your death. It consists of an accounting of everything you own or have certain interests in at the date of death. This is a double tax as you have already paid a tax on these things when they were first purchased or acquired.

The Death Tax Repeal Pledge advocates for the permanent repeal of the federal estate tax. Under existing law, the estate tax is levied on transfers of assets upon the death of a person and touches nearly every asset, including real estate, personal property, and capital investments. The current taxable rate is 35 percent, but is scheduled to rise to 55 percent in January 2013.

"We must let the "invisible hand' of the free market guide us, not more government taxes." Sharp remarked. "A repeal of the death tax would generate twice as much revenue over the next ten years than if the tax were to remain on the books."

The estate tax accounts for only one percent of federal revenues, according to the America Family Business Institute. As for small businesses, approximately 33 percent are affected by the federal estate tax, and many economists believe a repeal of the estate tax would speed up the economic recovery.

"Small business growth is the catalyst to restore the American economy," Sharp said.

"The elimination of the death tax is an essential step in the right direction to restore confidence among entrepreneurs and investors. If elected to serve the 9th Congressional District, I will fight to kill the death tax once and for all."
