Flashback Friday: 2007: Congresswoman Biggert Voted to Deny Coverage to Illinois Children

Congresswoman Judy Biggert voted with the Tea Party this week for the 27th time to symbolically repeal health reform and put Illinois families at risk of insurance company abuses without any kind of serious replacement proposal in sight. But this is not the first time Biggert has sided with insurance industries over children with pre-existing conditions. Congresswoman Biggert has a long history of voting against protections that would increase health care coverage for children - she repeatedly voted against the expansion and reauthorization of the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP).

Flashback 2007: In 2007, Congresswoman Biggert voted against the expansion and reauthorization of the Children's Health and Medicare Protection Act to provide children with health coverage. She also voted in favor of a motion to make SCHIP enrollment more difficult for families. Congresswoman Biggert stood with President Bush when he vetoed the legislation in 2007 and 2008, voting against a veto override twice. She voted against reauthorization of the bill again in 2009.

"Washington is broken when politics is an excuse to stand in the way of our children's health, but Congresswoman Biggert consistently put partisanship and the insurance industry ahead of the needs of Illinois families," said Bill Foster. "I don't believe we can't afford to risk gambling away our future to protect the insurance industry when we can help children get the health coverage they need. Illinois middle class families deserve a leader in Washington who will work to overcome partisan divides and focus on solving problems."
