Harkin Announces more than $4.5 Million in FEMA Grants for Cedar Rapids

Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) today announced that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has awarded $4,525,468.15 to the City of Cedar Rapids. The funding will go toward the construction of a new Public Works Complex, to replace the flood damaged building.

"The 2008 flood terribly impacted Cedar Rapids and rebuilding takes time and money," said Harkin. "This funding is one more step to replace an important facility that allows city services to operate efficiently."

The new complex will include the operations of waste management, fleet maintenance, forestry, and parks and recreation. The new consolidated replacement facility will consist of a precast panel structure measuring approximately 320,000 square feet. Complete demolition of the existing Public Works building and ancillary shops and buildings at the site including demolition and installation of a new fuel island, salt dome and materials storage bins is part of the complete site improvement package.
