Congresswoman Chellie Pingree welcomed a letter from Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius that reminds governors around the country that the recent Supreme Court decision upholding the health care reform law only affects future expansions of Medicaid programs.
Sebelius wrote that while the Supreme Court said if states don't expand Medicaid after 2014 they can't be penalized, "the Court's decision did not affect other provisions of the law."
"I'm glad to see Secretary Sebelius reminding the governors that the Supreme Court only struck down a narrow part of the law about Medicaid expansion after 2014," Pingree said. "It's exactly how we understood the decision."
Pingree has argued that the "maintenance of effort" provisions in the health care reform law prohibit Maine from cutting Medicaid for 27,000. Pingree plans to discuss the matter with Sebelius this week.
