Congressman Black Blasts President Obama's Plan to Raise Taxes

Location: Washington, DC

Today, U.S. Congressman Diane Black (R-TN) released the following statement criticizing President Obama's announcement of his plan to increase current tax rates on American families, small businesses and job creators.

"With unemployment above 8 percent for 41 straight months and 13 million Americans out of work, President Obama renewed his call for higher taxes. The president has yet to offer any explanation on how he thinks raising taxes will positively impact the economy and job creation. Higher taxes means less money for hiring and economic investment. And for what? To feed government's insatiable appetite for wasteful spending? Raising taxes on any American should be out of the question.

"From the president's continual demands for higher taxes to the avalanche of new regulations on top of his tax and spend health care law, his policies are causing immense uncertainty, racking up trillions in new debt and keeping unemployment above 8 percent. I look forward to voting in the coming weeks to extend the current tax rates for all Americans. This is a necessary step to provide much-needed certainty for American families, small businesses and job creators. But we can't stop there, we must work together to create a fairer, flatter and simpler tax code that lowers rates and closes loopholes."
