In an increasingly competitive global marketplace, it is vital that every child has access to high-quality primary and secondary education and subsequent opportunities for academic or vocational/technical study. To achieve that objective, I support efforts to streamline spending, promote flexibility and innovation, improve teacher quality and empower parents -- including school choice to provide better options for families in failing school districts. I will also support local, regional and national efforts to expand technical training opportunities that build the competitive workforce we need to grow both individual opportunity and our economic future.
As part of my commitment to smaller government and less regulation, I will support legislation to dissolve the U.S. Department of Education and block-grant its funding to the states. Education is a reserved power, and both Constitutional principles and the law of common sense dictate that its control should be as close to the people as possible.
