Joe is Committed To Representing The Keys
I will admit that I'm biased. I think the Keys represents some of the best community South Florida has to offer. I will have an office and staff operating full-time in the Keys. Every month, I will work from our Keys office and be available to meet constituents. Our staff will be in the community and available to handle all of the resident's needs. I will rely on friends and people I respect such as Key West Commissioner Tony Yaniz, Marathon Mayor Pete Worthington, Pam Martin, and Phil Schaeffer, amongst other community leaders, to give me insight and guidance on how to best help our constituents to the south.
Keys Issues Joe Will Focus On
Protecting our beautiful coastline and waters, which begins with opposing off-shore oil drilling. Our pristine waters and coasts are the economic engine of the Florida Keys, from tourism to the fishing industries. The BP oil spill gave us a scare and glimpse of the disastrous impact another spill could have on the Florida Keys. My Republican opponent voted to expand offshore oil drilling in Florida.
Reducing wastewater costs for Keys residents. Federal dollars are needed to help create a centralized sewer system that moves to eliminate the reliance on septic tanks and their high costs. I will work tirelessly to secure the federal funds for this project.
Making windstorm insurance available and affordable. Citizens Insurance is no longer willing to offer windstorm insurance for new homes valued over one million dollars or for second homes in the Keys. This is bad for existing homeowner property values and bad for the economy and is even holding up the sale of homes today. I will work to pass legislation that allows homeowners to get insurance that is backed by the federal government and currently available to those who live in flood zones and other high risk areas.
I will work to protect our great fishing community. The Keys account for 90% of spiny lobsters caught and consumed in the United States. I will make preserving and protecting the fishing industry and fishing rights a priority.
