As the father of two K-12 students, I will fight to make our children's future a top priority. While our local, rural schools have already been dealt crippling financial blows by declining enrollment and a shrinking tax base, Lansing Republicans have added insult to injury by cutting state education funding to pay for corporate tax benefits. These cuts could not have come at a worse time. An educated workforce not only makes it possible for our kids to compete for 21st-century jobs, it attracts new businesses with quality jobs to our area. I will fight to renew Michigan's promise of quality public education in a variety of ways.
First, I will advocate streamlining other areas of state government so that needed funds may be redirected to education. Second, I will propose increasing the lottery's contribution to education from the current 30 cents on the dollar. Finally, I will search for innovative ways to control school administration and operating costs, so that more school dollars reach our students' classrooms.
