While a senior at Pearl City High School, Mark was appointed to the U.S. Naval Academy and the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York. He attended Annapolis, but returned to Hawaii before completing his freshman year. To fulfill a personal commitment, he received a direct commission in 1999 as a First Lieutenant and Preventive Medical Officer in the Hawaii Army National Guard.
Mark is currently a Major in the Hawaii Army National Guard and serves as the equal employment opportunities officer and the school liaison officer. He is also very involved with the Hawaii National Guard Association and is the Vice President.
The military is a vital part of our community. It also contributes to our economic growth, with annual defense expenditures of around $5.6billion. In 2004, the Legislature created the Military Appreciation Package in recognition of the significant role and contributions of the military to Hawaii. Mark has served as the coordinator of the Military Appreciation Package since 2004.
In 2005, the Legislature created the Hawaii Medal of Honor, given to the families of service members who made the ultimate sacrifice and lost their lives supporting the War on Terrorism.
