U.S. Senate candidate Shelley Berkley released the following statement after President Obama signed the Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century Act into law, which stops student loan rates from doubling on Nevada families and re-authorizes the surface transportation program, which includes a provision that allows for future funding to build Interstate 11 from Las Vegas to Phoenix:
"Today, Nevada middle-class families can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that student loan rates will not double on them. There is no better path to success in our country than an affordable education. As the first member of my family to go to college and the mother of two sons, I know this firsthand. That is why I will fight to keep college affordable so that all Nevadans have the same opportunities that my family and I had.
"In addition to stopping the impending student loan rate increase, this new law brings us one step closer to connecting Las Vegas and Phoenix through a new modern interstate highway. Construction of Interstate 11 will generate good-paying jobs, improve Southern Nevada's economy, and create another path for tourists to come to Nevada to experience our incredible restaurants, resorts, national parks, and other world-class destinations."
