Today, Congresswoman Janice Hahn, founder and co-chair of the bipartisan Congressional PORTS Caucus, praised the final Surface Transportation bill for including a National Freight Policy.
"Moving goods to and from our ports and across the country is essential to our economy," noted Rep. Hahn. "Without a national plan, retailers and consumers will suffer from the severe bottlenecks transporting our goods. These bottlenecks translate into higher costs for consumers, more congestion, more pollution, and less jobs. We need to stop this piecemeal system and develop a national plan. This legislation is a good step forward."
This week, Congresswoman Hahn offered a Motion to Instruct House Conferees encouraging a national freight plan in the Surface Transportation bill. On May 11th, Congresswoman Hahn wrote a letter to the Chairman and Ranking Member of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee to encourage them to include a national freight policy in the final bill. The subject was also a central topic of discussion when PORTS Caucus members met with Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood on June 18th.
