Congressman John Carney issued the following statement today in recognition of Independence Day.
"Today, we celebrate Independence Day, when 236 years ago, our Founding Fathers courageously signed their names to the Declaration of Independence, marking the beginning of a new nation. Their actions embodied the spirit of freedom, equality, and democracy that continue to guide America today.
While we honor our Founding Fathers and the great risks they took on in declaring America's independence, today we also recognize the brave men and women in uniform who have made -- and continue to make -- great personal sacrifices for our nation. The United States remains a beacon of hope around the world because of our military's commitment to protecting the rights so many in America take for granted.
As we celebrate this truly American holiday with family and friends, let us reflect on the freedoms we enjoy as a nation, thank the men and women whose service protects us all, and continue working to make America an even better place for future generations.
Happy Independence Day!"
