Bishop Welcomes Top Trade Official for Events Focusing on Job Creation and Economic Growth on Long Island

Yesterday, Congressman Tim Bishop welcomed the Honorable Francisco J. Sánchez, Under Secretary of Commerce for International Trade, to Long Island for an official visit that included a roundtable discussion with Hispanic business leaders at Brookhaven Town Hall, an information forum on exporting for Long Island businesses, and a tour of ENECON Corporation in Medford, a successful Long Island-based business with global reach.

Sánchez leads the Department of Commerce's International Trade Administration, which works with American businesses to identify export opportunities for their products. Just last year, exports supported 9.7 million American jobs, and have supported an additional 1.2 million American jobs since 2009.

Yesterday morning at Patchogue-Medford Community Library, Congressman Bishop and Under Secretary Sánchez hosted an "Expanding Your Business Through Exporting" Forum where nearly 45 Long Island business leaders who are either already exporting and looking to expand to new markets, or who are interested in learning how to start exporting heard directly from the top official overseeing the federal agencies that regulate exporting activities and financing.

"Exporting is a major boon to our economy, job creation and growth on Long Island. I'm pleased so many local businesses left today's forum with a better understanding of the resources available from the federal government to help them expand their business through exporting and create additional jobs in our community," said Congressman Tim Bishop.

"Congressman Bishop is a tireless advocate for small business and manufacturing, and it's a pleasure to work with him in Washington," said Under Secretary Sánchez. "As I travel around the world, I see that products stamped with "Made In America' continue to be in great demand. This provides a clear opportunity for American businesses, both large and small, and we're here today to talk about how to find those opportunities through exporting."

Representatives of the International Trade Administration, the Small Business Administration and the Export-Import Bank joined Bishop and Sánchez in a panel discussion followed by a question-and answer session focused on the resources and services available to small businesses through these agencies. A video recording of the first half-hour of the forum is available on Congressman Bishop's YouTube page at http://bit.ly/OnkGO5.

Yesterday afternoon, Congressman Bishop and Under Secretary Sánchez visited the headquarters of ENECON Corporation in Medford to tour its state-of-the art headquarters with integrated lab, production, and distribution facilities. ENECON is a recognized world leader in developing advanced polymer composite technologies, specializing in unique industrial coatings that provide erosion and corrosion protection. They have worked closely in the past with such diverse and prestigious organizations as the Panama Canal, Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Navy and Army, nuclear and fossil fuel power stations, pulp and paper mills, petrochemical plants, mining and quarrying operations, and food processing facilities.
