Congressman Bill Johnson (R-Marietta) released the following statement today on the 236th anniversary of the United States' declaration of Independence from Great Britain:
This Fourth of July marks the 236th anniversary of America's declaration of Independence from Great Britain. The war that followed would come to define our spirit throughout our history. Brave men and women rallied together in defense of liberty, risking life and limb to preserve the very same ideals that we still hold dear today.
The events of the American Revolution demonstrated that freedom is not free, and it is always worth fighting for - and although our country has changed significantly over these past two and a half centuries, our determination to advance the cause of freedom remains.
Today is a celebration of America, our perseverance, and our independence, but it should also be an acknowledgment of the sacrifices of our veterans who have given so much since America's beginning. I encourage all of you to keep our veterans and those currently serving in your hearts and prayers this holiday.
Have a happy and safe Fourth of July.
