Pelosi: 'Today's Jobs Report Confirms that Republican Economic Policies are Failing'
Washington, D.C. - House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement this morning on the Bureau of Labor Statistics' announcement that 16 states lost jobs in September, while only 96,000 jobs were created, far lower than what economists predicted:
"Today's jobs report confirms that Republican economic policies have damaged communities from Connecticut to Oregon, including every region of the country. Overall, America has lost 1.6 million private-sector jobs since President Bush took office, and 16 states continued to lose jobs last month. This is the worst jobs record since the Great Depression. And it is inexcusable.
"It's time for a new commitment to creating jobs for our people. We should provide tax cuts for working families and for businesses that create jobs in America, not overseas. We should make smart investments in education, transportation, and the research and development we need to create the jobs of the future. And we should put federal spending on a pay-as-you-go system, to be sure we bring down the deficit and keep interest rates low for small businesses. We can do better."
