U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow today applauded U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk for taking action to address China's illegal restrictions on American-made automobiles.

"I applaud the Administration for taking strong action against China's illegal and anti-competitive restrictions on American-made automobiles," said Stabenow. "American automakers and autoworkers are surging back and can successfully compete as long as the playing field is level. The Administration and Congress need to aggressively stand up for American businesses and workers."

U.S. Trade Representative Kirk announced today that the U.S. is challenging China's illegal restrictions on over $3 billion in American-made automobile exports. These restrictions, known as antidumping and countervailing duties, were imposed by the Chinese government following President Obama's decision in September 2009 to institute a safeguard measure against cheap Chinese tire imports. The U.S. believes China imposed both antidumping and countervailing duties on imports of American-made cars and SUVs illegally.
