Issue Position

There is no question that America is a global leader in the health care industry. However, the future of that industry was put at risk in 2010 when the Democrat-controlled Congress and President forced a government overhaul, costing Americans twice the price for half the care.

The American people made it clear in 2010, and continue to make it clear today that they do not like the government run health care law, commonly referred to as "Obamacare." In March of 2012 the Supreme Court heard oral arguments on the constitutionality of this law. Their decision is expected in June.

House Republicans know that our country can provide access to quality health care for every American by improving our current system to expand health care coverage and reduce costs. Health care in America is about choice. At its core, it's about American families having the ability to choose the health care that best meets their needs. Congressman Camp knows this and as such, introduced H.R. 4038, the Common Sense Health Care Reform and Affordability Act, which when enacted will:

-Lower health care premiums;
-Guarantee affordable coverage for patients with pre-existing conditions;
-Protect Seniors Medicare benefits;
-Encourage small businesses to offer health care coverage;
-Enact real medical liability reform;
-Empower the doctor-patient relationship;
-Prohibit abortion funding;
-And work to reduce the deficit without taxing hard-working Americans.

Congressman Camp knows there is a better way to reform health care than an overhaul like Obamacare. He continues to work to implement this. He offered the first repeal of provisions in the bill after it was passed, and also offered the first repeal of the "individual mandate" that forces Americans to buy health insurance or face massive fines. Democrats voted to keep these provisions that strong arm Americans into health insurance even if they don't want or can't afford it.

Dave Camp joined his Republican colleagues in the House in January 2011 to pass H.R. 2, legislation that would repeal Obamacare in its entirety.

Camp authored the repeal of the job-killing 1099 IRS reporting provisions enacted by the federal healthcare legislation in 2010. In March of 2011, the president signed into law this repeal.

America can provide access to quality health care for every American by reducing the cost of health insurance, protecting those who have been or get sick, and expanding coverage. This can be done without having a government takeover of our health care system, without raising taxes or premiums, and without forcing Americans to buy health insurance they don't want or can't afford.
