As Mayor of Shoreline, I worked hard to make sure police department and fire district had the resources they needed to keep our neighborhoods safe.As a parent of a public school student, I know how important laws protecting our children from predators can be. As your State Representative, I will continue to work with police departments and prosecutors to ensure that Washington's laws protect us. My commitment to criminal justice is for smart prosecution -- laws that criminalize the most egregious conduct, without wasting resources on an endless cycle of jailing minor drug offenders without adequate treatment. I will fight to keep sex offenders and repeat violent offenders off the streets, while making sure that drug diversion programs, a renewed focus on mental health court, and job training are part of our response to nonviolent crime to make sure we aren't just continuing the cycle of arrest, release, and new offense.
As a Shoreline City Council member, I worked with neighborhoods to ensure that residents had a major say in what kind of development took place in their back yards. I am dedicated to the Growth Management Act, and will work to ensure that local control maintains a central part of any state regulation of development and growth. I believe that sound economic development is the cornerstone of our future -- and making sure that neighborhoods' support of local businesses is a key ingredient of economic success, providing local jobs, goods and services, while they share the tax burden with the residents. I will work to ensure that you have a choice in how your neighborhood is structured, and that local wishes are not lost in the shuffle of zoning and land use.
