"It is the paramount duty of the state to make ample provision for the education of all children residing within its borders."

These words, written into our State Constitution, are the foundation upon which I have been able to build a successful life for myself and my family. I am a direct beneficiary of the public schools in Washington State, from elementary school all the way up to the University of Washington. It is our responsibility to preserve this legacy of a quality education system for our children and future generations.

As your representative, I will fight to fully fund K-12 education. Our children are our most valuable resource and we need schools that recognize the potential in all students and create pathways to success for each child. We need schools that prepare our young adults to pursue a path of fulfillment and to attain a family wage job. We need schools that teach our children to think critically about the world and to become lifelong learners.

I also recognize that our job does not stop when our young men and women receive their high school diploma. We are blessed in this state with world-class universities and a strong network of community and technical colleges. I will work to preserve the quality of our post secondary institutions and ensure affordable access to higher education for our future artists and engineers, teachers, entrepreneurs and health care professionals.

But, if we are to truly fulfill our obligation to provide for the education of all of our children it is not enough to focus on our public schools, colleges and universities. The trade apprenticeship programs provide a path to a family wage job for many of our children. Together with our brothers and sisters in the skilled trades I will pursue opportunities to build bridges between our public schools and our trade apprenticeship programs and ensure that we have appropriate options for all our children.

As the President of the Shoreline Chamber of Commerce Dollars for Scholars program I have had the rare gift of meeting some of our best young scholars. As the proud mother of three children, I have watched as they each found their own unique path to success in our public schools. I have seen the future in the eyes of these young scholars and witnessed incredible strength in the hearts of my own children. It will be my paramount duty as your representative to ensure all of our children can see the future through their own eyes and have the strength to find their own path to success.
