Markey Honors Salem Towers Senior Housing in Malden with Award of Excellence

Today, Congressman Edward J. Markey (D-Malden), dean of the Massachusetts Congressional delegation and a Maldennative, presented Salem Towers Senior Housing with the Charles L. Edson Tax Credit Excellence Award for Senior Housing. The award recognizes the 80-unit Malden housing complex for its recent innovative and dynamic renovation that provides quality housing for low-income residents, some whom were previously homeless. Rep. Markey facilitated a first-in-the-nation waiver to convert enhanced vouchers to project based vouchers, enabling the rehabilitation of Salem Towers to move forward. Salem Towers is the oldest Section 202 affordable housing complex in New England and the oldest Jewish-sponsored 202 in the nation. Rep. Markey presented the award on behalf of the Affordable Housing Tax Credit Coalition.

"At Salem Towers, they've not only renovated the building, they've revitalized the daily experiences of our seniors, who now have access to the world-class amenities they deserve," said Rep. Markey. "After a lifetime of hard work, seniors in Malden can now enjoy their beautiful surroundings at Salem Towers in the heart of Malden and in the company of their friends. I applaud our "Housing Hero' Marc Slotnick for his tireless efforts and innovative strategy to make Salem Towers a national model to save low-income housing across the nation."

Prior to the renovation at Salem Towers, there were no handicap accessible units. The main bathrooms and main sidewalk were not accessible to people with disabilities, and the kitchens were over 45 years old. Now, thanks to a renovation that was completed on time and on budget, residents can enjoy the new fireplace in the reading and computer room, new entertainment options, and new resident services including twice a week exercise and computer classes. The building now has 18 accessible apartments and a second elevator was added to the exterior of the building. Residents can enjoy sweeping views of Boston from the roof deck.

The Section 202 program helps expand the supply of affordable housing with supportive services for seniors. The program provides very low-income seniors with options thatallow them to live independently in surroundings that provide support activities such as cleaning, cooking, and transportation.
