Getting help from the federal government

The Federal Government can be a difficult maze to navigate when attempting to get assistance. Thankfully, there is a helpful hand nearby for all United States citizens. A major job for every U.S. Congressional office is to help constituents get connected to the right federal agencies and follow them through the process of resolving an issue.

Our office is trained and skilled to work on your behalf when you most need help. From assistance with Social Security Disability Claims and Social Security Income problems, to Veterans Affairs and Active Military Duty issues, to assistance with Medicare, passports, or the IRS, we're ready to assist. Below are the stories of just a few of the hundreds of people we've helped work with the federal government.

A name on The Wall

On Memorial Day this year, David "Larry" Deckard's name was inscribed into the Vietnam War Memorial in Washington, D.C. Larry was extensively injured in Vietnam when a rocket struck his vehicle, and in 2006 passed away due to his injuries. His brother Virgil Deckard contacted our office in an attempt to get his brother's sacrifice on behalf of our country recognized. Through Virgil's persistence and our staff's determination, Larry Deckard will forever be acknowledged on the Vietnam War Memorial. You can read the entire story by clicking here.

Long lost medals

Navy Airman Robert Austin from Madison served in the military over 46 years ago and never received the recognition he deserved for his service. Mr. Austin was serving on the U.S.S. Yorktown in the Gulf of Tonkin when the Vietnam war officially started, and service medals were the last thing on his mind when he returned home. When he contacted the agency that oversees military service medals years later, he discovered they had made a mistake in sending them. After trying for several years to obtain his medals, a caseworker in the 9th District office in Jeffersonville was able to finally resolve the issue four and a half decades later. Last month, I had the honor of presenting Mr. Austin with The National Defense Service Medal and Vietnam Service Medal with two bronze stars. You can read the entire story by clicking here.
