Congressman Robert Hurt today released the following statement today after Secretary of Interior, Ken Salazar, announced that the Final 5-Year Program for Outer Continental Shelf Oil and Gas Development would exclude resources off the coast of Virginia:
"This announcement today by Secretary Salazar is truly regrettable at a time when the 5th District and the Commonwealth are being crushed under the burden of failed policies put forth in Washington. Over the past three years, Central and Southside Virginians have been left with fewer jobs and more regulations as Washington fails to enact policies that will jumpstart our economy. Listening to the wishes of the people, the House has voted time and time again to enhance our energy independence and create jobs -- just last week passing legislation that would authorize exploration off the Virginia coast. Today's announcement is another example of how the Administration continues to serve as a barrier to job creation as it blocks further opportunities to create American jobs and spur economic growth while giving us freedom from dependence on foreign energy sources."
