The sole purpose of collecting taxes is to finance the core functions of state government. Somerville and his colleagues led the fight to close a $1.5 billion deficit through sweeping spending reforms and were able to put $700 million into savings accounts and paying down long-term debt. We finished the entire process the earliest it has been done in three decades. We must continue to be good stewards of the taxpayer's money. Our hardworking taxpayers have a right to know where and how their money is being spent. Somerville will continue to lead the charge to create a more transparent and accountable budget.
