Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Director John Morton and U.S. Customs and Border Protection Acting Commissioner David V. Aguilar today traveled to Dallas to participate in the 39th Annual National Latino Peace Officers Association's (NLPOA) Training Conference. Secretary Napolitano delivered remarks highlighting the Department's commitment to collaborating with federal, state, local, tribal and territorial law enforcement to combat evolving threats and protect our nation's communities.
"Homeland security is a shared responsibility across all levels of law enforcement," said Secretary Napolitano. "We have made significant progress over the past three and a half years in transforming how we work together to share information and build new capabilities while identifying and addressing evolving threats to enhance public safety."
During her remarks, Secretary Napolitano highlighted the strong relationship between DHS and partner organizations, including the NLPOA, to make our communities safe, secure and more resilient. In January, Secretary Napolitano met with public and private sector representatives, including officials from the NLPOA, at a roundtable discussion at the White House to discuss the Department's efforts to combat human trafficking.
At the conference, Secretary Napolitano and ICE Director Morton presented the NLPOA Officer of the Year Award posthumously to the family of ICE Homeland Security Investigations Special Agent Jaime Zapata.
