"I am thrilled to announce that the Detroit Fire Department received a grant of over $22 million from the Department of Homeland Security's Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) program. This grant will prevent the layoffs of more than 100 firefighters in Detroit.
I have been a champion of federal funding for firefighters, and I urged Department of Homeland Security officials to award this grant to Detroit. This month, I worked with colleagues to successfully appropriate additional funding for federal grants for firefighters in the fiscal year 2013 Homeland Security Appropriations bill. This funding is crucial to creating jobs in Detroit while protecting our families and our neighborhoods."
