Issue Position: Public Employees' Benefit Programs

Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2012

We really need to reform the public employees' benefit programs so that they are all, every last one of them, covered under the same plan for both health and retirement. It is appalling to think that one person can retire with more than their working wage was, while another is left in poverty.

One group cannot sustain the government system without the other so therefore all of them are equally valuable. They should all get equal coverage and retirement. The only group of public employees that should have separated benefits unique to their jobs should really be those in the emergency and protective services sector due to the health risks they incur during their employment. If we are not buying with different plans the cost should go down while the lower benefit packages should improve. Any company or union not willing to negotiate for this type of system is disenfranchising some of our employees. These are our workers and they should be equally cared about by their representatives and each other.
