Rep. Scott Garrett (R-NJ), Founder and Chairman of the Congressional Constitution Caucus, rebuked the United States Supreme Court today after it upheld the constitutionality of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, otherwise known as ObamaCare. On the first day of the 112th Congress, Garrett introduced H.R. 21, the Reclaiming Individual Liberty Act, to repeal the unconstitutional individual mandate included in ObamaCare.
Garrett issued the following statement after the Supreme Court announced its decision:
"I could not be more disappointed with the Supreme Court's decision. In the annals of history, today will be remembered as the day in which the United States Supreme Court failed the American people. The individual mandate, the foundation upon which ObamaCare stands, represents an unprecedented power-grab by the federal government that undermines our Constitution and the Founders' vision of limited government.
"As countless constitutional scholars have noted, our Founding Fathers never conceived of a federal government with such expansive powers. They designed a system of checks and balances that divides state and federal authority in the hope of preventing any one government from exerting too much control over the freedom and liberty of its citizens.
"Aside from violating the Constitution, President Obama's health care law has passed along billions of dollars in costs to taxpayers, suffocated small businesses with increased burdens and compliance costs, and sidelined as much as $2 trillion of capital from a struggling economy where the unemployment rate has been above 8% for 40 consecutive months.
"Efforts to reform one-sixth of our economy shouldn't be rushed through Congress with thousands of pages of new rules and regulations that the American people don't support. I believe Americans should have the freedom to choose their doctor and health care, leaving bureaucrats in Washington out of these important personal decisions. I remain committed to working with my colleagues in Congress to enact market-based solutions to bring down the cost of health care for families and small businesses across America."
