Congressman John Carney Statement on Supreme Court's Affordable Care Act Ruling

Statement

Date: June 28, 2012

U.S. Congressman John Carney (D-DE) today released the following statement regarding the Supreme Court's ruling on the Affordable Care Act:

"Today's Supreme Court ruling is good news for America.

"The Affordable Care Act has been distorted and demonized over the last three years. In reality, the legislation makes some badly needed reforms to our healthcare system that will positively affect the lives of millions of Americans. People shouldn't be denied coverage because of a pre-existing condition. Nor should they be forced into bankruptcy because they exceeded an arbitrary lifetime limit on coverage of essential benefits. This law makes sure that won't happen.

"The Court has put to rest the constitutional debate over the Affordable Care Act. Now, I believe we should turn our attention to slowing the rapid growth of healthcare costs. These costs have doubled in the last decade. They are the biggest threat to our nation's financial future.

"The Affordable Care Act, while not perfect, is designed to lower the trajectory of healthcare costs moving forward. But there is more work to do. I look forward to working with my colleagues to continue improving the Affordable Care Act as we implement its provisions in the coming years."
