Congressman Mike Fitzpatrick (PA-08) issued the following statement today in response to the Supreme Court's decision regarding the Affordable Care Act:
"Today's Supreme Court decision regarding the Affordable Care Act enabled one of the largest tax increases for middle income families in American history. Our nation simply cannot afford this government-mandate crafted by the misguided policies of Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats.
I oppose a government-run healthcare system funded by mandatory taxes which puts bureaucrats, not patients and doctors, in charge of healthcare. This law did little to drive down the cost of healthcare and will be funded, disastrously, on the backs of those who are already paying their fair share.
In my visits with businesses this summer, they explained that this legal opinion upholding the mandate for families and countless taxes would be the worst possible outcome for them to get our economy moving once again. Without a full repeal, the government will continue to hold our economy hostage and middle income families will be taxed out of recovery.
I was sent to Congress to put our country back on the right track. It is important that we use today's decision as an opportunity to bring people together to find real, practical and affordable solutions to make healthcare more accessible for all families in America. It is imperative that we fix our healthcare system so that the popular provisions of the Affordable Care Act are kept while the widely unpopular provisions which will hurt our economy are repealed."
