Statement on Supreme Court Decision on Arizona Immigration Law

Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Senator Daniel K. Akaka (D-Hawaii) issued the following statement on the United States Supreme Court decision, Arizona v. United States, finding three major sections of Arizona's controversial immigration law unconstitutional.

"I am pleased that the Supreme Court struck down key elements of Arizona's aggressive immigration law. However, I am concerned that the part of the law left in place - allowing local police to check the immigration status of anyone suspected to be in the country illegally - will target individuals based on appearance and speech. This decision illustrates the pressing need for comprehensive immigration reform."
