Governor Kathleen Sebelius Issues Statement on Colonel Joe Rose

Date: May 2, 2003

Governor Kathleen Sebelius released the following statement today:

"I am supportive of the decisive action outlined to me by General Gardner, and I hope that the resolution of this matter will restore the high morale of the thousands of men and women who serve in the Kansas National Guard. These citizen soldiers and airmen deserve our respect and support, and should enjoy confidence that their leaders act with utmost integrity and conduct beyond reproach.

"Colonel Rose made a serious mistake. General Gardner has decided to reject his appeal and involuntarily separate Colonel Rose from the Adjutant General's department as its Human Resource Officer, effective immediately. Colonel Rose will also be required to pay back the money that he received from the improper handling of his retroactive promotion.

"The Human Resources position previously held by Colonel Rose is now posted, effective today. The Deputy Human Resources Officer will assume the duties in the interim.

"I would like to thank the men and women who are members of the Kansas National Guard, protecting our state and people all over the world. These citizen soldiers and airmen deserve our support and it is my hope that now that this investigation is complete, they can again focus on the important job they have at hand."
