Rep. Rohrabacher to Clinton & Panetta: No More American Blood for Karzai's Family Fortune & China's Oil

Press Release

Location: Washington, DC

Today, Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA) sent letters to Secretary of State Clinton and Secretary of Defense Panetta to express outrage over Americans dying so that Afghan President Karzai's family and Communist Chinese state owned oil companies can get rich.

"Why are Americans dying, why is our country going deeper into dept to help secure resources for the Communist Party of China and to make Karzai's family richer than they already are," writes Rohrabacher.

Media reports indicate that the Afghan government is threatening to arrest General Abdul Rashid Dostum, a political opposition leader from Northern Afghanistan, for stopping a Chinese State owned corporation from developing an Afghan oil field. The Chinese company is operating in partnership with the Wanat Group, owned by cousins of President Karzai and invested in by his brother, Qayum Karzai.

"The level of corruption and war profiteering by the Karzai family is huge," says Rohrabacher. "The Wanat Group, which is controlled by members of the Karzai family has been implicated is the past for corruption and is now openly working to give Tajik-Afghan resources to the Chinese. Not only is this disenfranchising the non-Pashtun ethnic majority of Afghanistan, it is an insult to the Americans who have sacrificed their lives to protect the Afghan government. Karzai has squandered America's sacrifice and all of Afghanistan will pay the price of his corruption when the Taliban returns to power."

Rep. Rohrabacher is Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations which held a hearing on June 6th titled, "Investigating Waste, Fraud, and Abuse in Afghanistan."
