Polis Applauds DHS Decision to Cease Deportation of Dreamers

Statement

Location: Boulder, CO
Issues: Immigration

Congressman Jared Polis issued the following statement in response to an announcement by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) that it would immediately end the deportation of young people who were brought to the U.S. as children and who do not present a risk to national security and public safety.

"I applaud the Obama administration and Secretary Napolitano for taking this common-sense step toward a more sane immigration policy. This decision will allow hundreds of thousands of young people to legally support their families, contribute to our nation, pay taxes, and make our country safer and stronger.

"We should be investing scarce law enforcement resources protecting Americans from serious criminals rather than wasting taxpayer money deporting bright, hard-working students and soldiers who have broken no law. We must take these steps now until we have a Congress that is ready to work with President Obama to pass the real solution: comprehensive immigration reform.

"I look forward to reading more details of the Department's proposal. I also urge the administration and Secretary Napolitano to fulfill its promise to end the deportation of Dream Act students."
