Today, Congresswoman Frederica Wilson (D-Fla.) issued the following statement on the 40th anniversary of Title IX, which was signed into law on June 23, 1972:
"For 40 years, Title IX has empowered young women, helping them to become successful in their careers and serve as role models. Studies have proven that girls who play sports do better in school and stay out of trouble. Through sports, they learn how to translate teamwork into their professional careers, regardless of the path they choose. It's not just about athletic scholarships, Olympians and professional women's basketball and soccer leagues. It's about raising more than two generations of women who are empowered and treated with equality.
"Because of Title IX and the opportunities that it has afforded, young women have opportunities like never before. As a mother of two daughters and grandmother of one granddaughter, I am especially proud to celebrate four decades of equality for women in education and school sports."
