I care passionately about the education of our children, and I truly believe that they are the future of our state.
I believe in accountability for our schools and for our teachers, and that good teachers should be rewarded for the progress that their students make. I also believe that those who teach at our inner-city schools and inspire children to learn and succeed every day deserve to be rewarded. In addition, it is imperative that we prepare our children for a competitive global marketplace by encouraging children to go into the fields of math and science, and to participate in higher education.
School choice and virtual charter schools are another vital aspect of education reform. They provide children and their families with valuable options, and also expand the opportunities for home-schooled students to enroll in the state-financed virtual programs.
When I served as Speaker of the House in 1999, I worked hand-in-hand with Governor Jeb Bush on education reform, and we achieved the single-largest increase in funding for public education in our state's history, a fact that I am deeply proud of. Now, I will fight to ensure that those education dollars are spent inside the classroom, where they are most needed.
The path to prosperity in our district and state is built on a solid education, and as a Senator I will make certain that our children's education is my top priority.
