Today, Congressman Todd Akin's (R-MO), Stop Abortion Funding in Multi-state Exchange Plans (SAFE) Act, was incorporated into the FY2013 House Financial Services Appropriations bill. H.R. 4971, the SAFE Act ensures that coverage offered under "multi-state" health plans administered by the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) in state exchanges is consistent with the current Federal abortion funding ban and preserves the law of fifteen states, including Missouri, that have passed legislation opting out of abortion coverage on their exchanges. Congressman Akin released the following statement:

"I am pleased that the House Appropriations Committee included language similar to my SAFE Act in their Financial Services Appropriations bill. This provision is essential because it preserves the longstanding federal abortion funding ban that will apply to all health care plans administered by the Office of Personnel Management (OPM.)

"Abortion is not health care, and I will not rest until our laws prohibit the use of federal tax dollars for abortions. Taxpayers should not have to fund what they believe is immoral and I appreciate the efforts of Congressman Nunnelee (MS-01) in offering this language during today's markup."
