Issue Position: Education

Issue Position

As a first generation college graduate, I discovered the power of education. Today, I have the honor of passing along that same educational power, serving as an educator for Pueblo Community College -- the same college where I began my educational journey.

Nationally, Colorado is ranked 43 in per-pupil funding for K-12 education and is ranked 49th for funding of higher education. Not surprisingly, Colorado also ranks 49th, nationally, for our ability to bridge the achievement gap for students in poverty.

Strategic investment in education ensures a stronger economic future for Colorado. We need state-level leadership that strives to raise performance, close achievement gaps, promote flexibility and innovation, and better prepares students for college or the workplace -- without unnecessary mandates. We must ensure Colorado students are ready to engage and compete in a 21st century global economy.
