U.S. Senate candidate David Dewhurst released the following statement today regarding President Obama's decision to grant work permits to illegal immigrants who came to the U.S. as children:
"President Barack Obama's decision to grant work permits to illegal immigrants who came to the U.S. as children is nothing short of backdoor amnesty by executive fiat and a blatant political ploy. Bypassing Congress' authority to implement this policy also sets a dangerous precedent for future debates on important issues.
"Instead of participating in election-year gimmicks, President Obama should follow the rule of law and secure our border, something his administration and the federal government have fundamentally failed to do.
"Here in Texas, we face the impacts of illegal immigration on our economy every day, as well as the violence from drug cartels and transnational gangs infiltrating our neighborhoods. In the U.S. Senate, I will propose tripling the size of the border patrol and increasing the use of technology and intelligence to help secure our borders."
