The following is a statement from State Representative Marc Veasey, candidate for Texas' congressional district 33, in response to today's news that President Obama will implement a policy to allow young immigrants to stay in this country legally on the condition that they were brought to this country as children and played by the rules their entire lives. This announcement marks a significant step towards realization of the goals of the DREAM Act. Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney has stated that, if elected, he would veto the DREAM Act.
"I have always been a staunch supporter of the DREAM Act and I am very proud of our President for taking this bold step. This is especially important in Texas because more than a fourth of the young people in this country who would benefit from this decision live here. Far too many young Hispanics, despite this being the only country they have ever known, have had to live in constant fear of deportation. They can now be free to pursue their education free of that fear. However, there are still obstacles keeping them from fully contributing to our society and that is why, if elected, I will fight alongside our President to make the full DREAM Act a reality. Republicans like Mitt Romney aim to take us backwards and drive these Dreamers into the shadows. One of my priorities in Congress will be to make sure that never happens."
