Rep. Luis V. Gutierrez (D-IL-4) issued the following statement reacting to the Senate's long-delayed vote to move the confirmation process forward for Mari Carmen Aponte as U.S. Ambassador to El Salvador.
"Mari Carmen Aponte makes the Puerto Rican community proud and has already played a constructive role in our relations with El Salvador, an important Latin American neighbor. It is about time the Senate approved her appointment. I am pleased that the Senate did not let petty partisan politics derail this highly qualified Latina to serve the United States in a high profile position and that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid moved the vote forward and tenaciously stuck by her."
