Congressman Steve King released the following statement today after the Iowa Transportation Commission approved the FY 2013-2017 Iowa Transportation Improvement Program yesterday. The Program includes $101.7 million in funding for work in western Iowa to expand Highway 20 to four lanes. King has been a champion of widening Highway 20 to four lanes in western Iowa for decades and has supported the work as a private citizen living in northwest Iowa and as a state senator and U.S. Congressman representing the area. Throughout his time in Congress, King has helped to secure more than $26 million in federal funds for completion of four lane Highway 20.
"We have now crossed the great divide of Highway 71 and the entire 4-lane Highway 20 project that many of us have worked on for decades has passed the tipping point," said King. "There is now no doubt that in a few years, we will be able to put our cruise control on 65 mph and drive all the way to Dubuque. A total of $95.7 million of the $101.7 million will be spent in Woodbury County. I thank the commissioners and the community leaders who have worked together to make this happen."
