Issue Position

Both my daughter and my son have always attended public schools. I believe that with the proper funding and support, they provide an education that is on par with, and sometimes superior to, that found in the private school setting. I will work toward implementing the initiatives and funding necessary to increase the safety, quality and viability of our public school system. We need to acknowledge that how we prepare our children, our workers and our leaders for the future will determine whether we grow and prosper together, or remain separated by inequality of education and opportunity.

I will address the staggering number of South Carolinians who have no path to a traditional education, and need alternative solutions. We must acknowledge the needs of those who have been incarcerated and emerge without the tools to enable them to become productive members of our communities. We must also provide training for those whose skills need to be updated in order to compete in a new economy with new technology. With the right tools, our workforce can emerge as a powerful economic force in the U.S.
