Today we concluded another week under this "do-nothing" Republican Congress with no action on critical legislation. Once again, House Republicans refused to take up comprehensive legislation that would create jobs or restore certainty to our economy. They are now heading home for their ninth recess, despite calls from Democrats urging the House of Representatives to stay in session to address critical legislation. Republicans' summer agenda does nothing to address the largest issues facing our country, including job creation, deficit reduction, a plan for restoring our nation's transportation infrastructure, preventing student loan rates from doubling, and extending the tax cuts for middle class without holding them hostage to tax cuts for our nation's wealthiest.
That's why it was particularly disappointing to hear House Republicans suggest that they would consider a short-term extension of a highway transportation bill. A long-term transportation bill will provide much needed certainty by creating jobs and investing in our economy. The Senate passed a highway bill with overwhelming bipartisan support. House Republicans need to stop wasting time, and work with us to complete this legislation.
Additionally, on July 1, student loan interest rates will double if Congress does not take action. Instead of addressing this issue and providing students with financial security, House Republicans have played political games by offering controversial measures to pay-for a bill to prevent interest rates from going up. We must address this issue swiftly, and I will continue to call on Republicans to bring a bipartisan to the Floor.
