As someone who was the first person in her family to attend college due to student loans, Shelley knows the importance of ensuring that all Nevada students have access to the same opportunities that she had. That's why she's voted to lower the interest rate on student loans, and has backed efforts to increase the value and number of Pell Grants.
Shelley has stood up for Nevada's school children by securing resources to hire hundreds of classroom teachers to keep class sizes small, and has fought to help disadvantaged students with reading and math. She's also worked to maintain Head Start programs, so every Nevada student can get a solid start to their education.
As many Nevada workers have found, especially in this tough economy, sometimes the job you want isn't the job you've been trained to do. Having education available to workers throughout their careers is critical to ensuring Nevada's workers are the best trained and best prepared for the future. And Shelley's made sure Nevada schools, apprenticeship programs, and partnerships have the resources needed to deliver that education.
