True statesmen (rather than political opportunists) understand that there are principles upon which their every decision should be based in order for government to fill its proper, but limited role: that rights come from God, not man and that the sole responsibility of government is summed up in three categories -- the protection of life, the free exercise of conscience, and the right and control of property.
