Issues: Education

I have always understood the importance of education. Due to the birth explosion of the "Baby Boomer" generation and the federal government's focus on education, every school I ever attended was new. In 1964, I graduated from Jesse H. Jones High School located in southeast Houston, a block off of South Park Blvd (now, Martin Luther King Blvd). Jones High School was recognized nationally as one of academic excellence.

Following my graduation from high school, I entered the University of Houston as a math major and completed my first year before being married in August of 1965. I only attended the University of Houston part time for one more year. With my attention shifting to aviation, I enrolled in San Jacinto College's aviation technology classes which lead to my first professional aviation position with Houston Metro Airlines.

My son completed his degree in psychology from the University of Houston Clear Lake and now with a Masters Degree, is currently the Special Education Assistant Principal at a local Pasadena high school. Last year, my youngest daughter completed her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Houston and has been working on post graduate studies. Four of my grand children will be attending college this fall and the majority of the others are in the K-12 education system.

As a United States Congressman for The Texas 36th District, I will work with The Federal Department of Education, Texas Education Agency, area school districts and local educators in each of the nine counties to come up with ways to improve the drop out rates and the educational experience in general, for all of the young people of Southeast Texas. For information on specific approaches for each county, click on the link below. [See candidate web site]
